It usually takes about one week for trismus (difficulty opening the mouth) caused by pericoronitis of wisdom teeth to resolve. Pericoronitis is typically caused by food debris around the crown of a wisdom tooth becoming infected with bacteria. With timely anti-inflammatory treatment, such as metronidazole or amoxicillin, under a doctor's guidance, symptoms generally begin to improve within 2 to 3 days.
