Congenital cleft lip and palate may occur when parents or other immediate family members have a history of cleft lip and palate, significantly increasing the child's risk. It may also result from maternal malnutrition during pregnancy, untreated bacterial or viral infections, indiscriminate use of medications, or prolonged exposure to harmful substances or radiation, all of which can lead to the development of cleft lip and palate.
