Effects and Efficacy of Lycii Cortex
Disease description:
I’ve been experiencing some “internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept) over the past couple of days, and my throat also feels uncomfortable. My father prepared a decoction for me containing Lycii Root Bark (Di Gu Pi). Could you please tell me specifically what effects this herb has?
Hello,
Lycii Cortex (the root bark of *Lycium chinense* or *Lycium barbarum*) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb with cold and dry properties. It enters the Lung, Liver, and Kidney meridians and functions to cool the blood, eliminate deficient-heat (i.e., “steaming” heat), clear Lung heat, and subdue fire. Clinically, it is commonly used to treat conditions such as tidal fever, night sweats, and internal heat-induced thirst and polydipsia—symptoms often arising from Yin deficiency.
However, please note that Lycii Cortex is not suitable for everyone; individuals with a constitutionally cold or deficient-cold pattern should generally avoid its use.
I hope this information is helpful. Wishing you good health!
