Over time, the pleural effusion will gradually be absorbed. However, if there is a significant amount of fluid causing compression of the heart and lungs, impairing respiratory function, and leading to symptoms such as chest tightness and shortness of breath, surgical intervention with closed thoracic drainage is required.
