After a rib fracture, pleural effusion may occur. If the fluid accumulation is minimal, conservative treatment can be considered. Conservative management mainly includes bed rest and wearing a chest belt for protection. When necessary, amoxicillin capsules may be used under medical guidance to prevent infection. Over time, the pleural effusion will gradually be absorbed. However, if there is a significant amount of fluid causing compression of the heart and lungs, impairing respiratory function, and leading to symptoms such as chest tightness and shortness of breath, surgical intervention with closed thoracic drainage is required.
