What are the effects of atrial septal defect in a six-month-old baby?
Disease description:
My baby is only six months old, but has been diagnosed with atrial septal defect, a strange condition. What impact does atrial septal defect have on a six-month-old infant?
A six-month-old baby with atrial septal defect may experience impaired normal intellectual development, and symptoms such as pallor and excessive sweating may occur. Small secundum-type atrial septal defects have the possibility of spontaneous closure within one year, but the likelihood of closure decreases after age one. Large ostium primum-type atrial septal defects are less likely to heal on their own. In severe cases, children may later develop pulmonary hypertension, and after crying, may exhibit serious symptoms such as myocardial ischemia and hypoxia.
