Disease description:

This year, after going to the hospital for fetal heart monitoring and failing the test, the doctor required hospitalization for oxygen therapy. Why do pregnant women who fail fetal heart monitoring need oxygen?

Doctor's answer (1)
Dr. Wang Mingxuan
Abnormal fetal heart monitoring in pregnant women is due to irregularities in the fetal heartbeat, which is often associated with fetal hypoxia; therefore, oxygen supplementation is required. Fetal heart monitoring uses ultrasound principles to observe the condition of the fetus inside the uterus, enabling accurate assessment of fetal well-being. If there is a noticeable decrease or increase in fetal movement, this may indicate fetal hypoxia, and oxygen therapy should be administered. Fetal cardiac monitoring provides relatively precise results. However, if fetal heart monitoring still fails to meet the standard criteria after oxygen administration, further examinations and interventions are necessary, such as performing an oxytocin challenge test (OCT) to determine the underlying cause of the abnormal fetal heart rate.
