Patients with pharyngitis generally do not cough continuously. Chronic pharyngitis causes the mucosal tissue to secrete excessive mucus, leading to a sensation of a foreign body in the throat, which may result in reflexive coughing. However, persistent coughing is not necessarily caused by pharyngitis—it is likely due to other underlying conditions. Coughing is also common when exposed to irritating odors.
