What causes light brown spotting outside of the menstrual period?
Disease description:
It's not yet the menstrual period, but there is a small amount of brownish bleeding. I'm a bit worried about having an illness and would like to know what could be causing this.
Light brown spotting outside of the menstrual period may occur during ovulation, when a small amount of endometrial shedding causes slight bleeding. It could also result from insufficient luteal function after ovulation and before menstruation. Additionally, conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease or hormonal imbalances may cause this symptom. Treatment may include progestin medications as directed by a physician; commonly used drugs include drospirenone-ethinyl estradiol and desogestrel-ethinyl estradiol.
