In clinical practice, there are many conditions that can cause emphysema. If a patient has chronic bronchitis leading to narrowing of the bronchi and trachea, resulting in incomplete obstruction, premature closure of the airways during exhalation may increase alveolar residual volume, causing overinflation of the alveoli and potentially triggering emphysema. Additionally, recurrent pulmonary infections or chronic inflammation in the patient may also contribute to the development of emphysema.
