What causes bleeding gums when brushing teeth in leukemia?
Disease description:
My girlfriend was recently diagnosed with leukemia. These past couple of days, she has noticed bleeding while brushing her teeth. What causes bleeding during toothbrushing in patients with leukemia?
Leukemia patients experience impaired production of normal blood cells, including platelets, due to the proliferation of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow. Platelets play a crucial role in blood clotting, and when their levels are reduced by leukemia, patients become prone to bleeding tendencies, including gum bleeding. Additionally, leukemia may impair immune system function, increasing the risk of infections, which can negatively affect oral health and lead to gingival inflammation and bleeding. If a leukemia patient experiences bleeding while brushing teeth, they should promptly communicate with their healthcare team for appropriate evaluation and treatment. Possible interventions may include modifying oral care practices, using soft-bristled toothbrushes, maintaining good oral hygiene, receiving dental examinations and treatments, and, if necessary, undergoing platelet transfusions or adjustments to their leukemia treatment regimen.
