Is it appropriate for children with short stature to see a nutrition specialist?
Disease description:
My child has always been much shorter than peers of the same age. A friend suggested that I take my child to the hospital for an evaluation. Can I make an appointment with the nutrition department for a child who is not growing tall enough?
If a child is not growing tall, it is acceptable to see a pediatric nutrition specialist if the hospital has a dedicated pediatric nutrition department; however, it is usually recommended to visit the child health care department or pediatric endocrinology department for evaluation and examination. Short stature in children may result from malnutrition, growth hormone deficiency (dwarfism), or inherited metabolic disorders, among other causes. It is important first to identify the specific underlying cause of the growth delay before seeking targeted treatment in the appropriate specialty department.
