Risks of elevated absolute lymphocyte count
Disease description:
During my last physical exam, my doctor mentioned that my absolute lymphocyte count was high. What are the potential risks associated with an elevated absolute lymphocyte count?
If the absolute lymphocyte count is only slightly elevated, there is generally no need for concern, as the body's immune system may be effectively fighting off the virus. However, if the absolute lymphocyte count is significantly high, one should be cautious about the possibility of lymphocytic leukemia. Leukemia is characterized by abnormal proliferation of leukemic cells in the bone marrow and other hematopoietic tissues, primarily involving infiltration of immature lymphocytes into various organs and tissues, leading to failure of normal hematopoiesis and a marked reduction in normal blood-forming cells. It is recommended to maintain a balanced diet and ensure adequate rest.
