Excessive tearing is mostly caused by pathogen infection. The most common pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae, although some viruses can also be responsible. If a patient has recently had a cold or has low immunity, the respiratory system becomes susceptible to bacterial infection, potentially leading to severe colds. Symptoms typically include high body temperature, nasal congestion, and excessive tearing. Because the nose and eye are in close proximity, patients often fail to take proper precautions—using hands that have wiped nasal discharge to wipe away tears—which allows pathogens to invade the lacrimal gland tissue and cause viral dacryoadenitis.
