Lacrimal irrigation for dacryoadenitis may still result in tearing, possibly because the lacrimal passage has not been thoroughly flushed. Tears normally drain from the lacrimal gland through the lacrimal passages into the nasal cavity and oral cavity. When the lacrimal passage is obstructed, tears overflow from the eyes, leading to lacrimal duct disorders. The lacrimal passage includes the puncta, canaliculi, nasolacrimal duct, and lacrimal sac. Obstruction in any of these parts can cause impaired tear drainage. The most common cause of lacrimal obstruction is dacryocystitis, in which inflammation leads to adhesion of the lacrimal mucosa, resulting in blockage of the tear duct.
