Disease description:

My child is nine years old, and recently I've noticed that he has developed many mouth ulcers. Could you please explain why a nine-year-old child still has mouth ulcers after they appear to have healed?

Dr. Guo Huijie
A 9-year-old child may grin or pull their mouth open after recovering from a mouth ulcer due to the oral mucosa still being sensitive following healing, or because the child has developed some discomfort-related memories during the healing process, leading to an unconscious avoidance of opening the mouth wide. Additionally, grinning might be the child's way of expressing relief or pleasure, as the pain has subsided and they now feel more comfortable after the ulcer has healed. Parents should encourage the child to maintain good oral hygiene in daily life, avoid hard, hot, or spicy foods, and ensure the child receives adequate nutrition—especially nutrients beneficial for oral mucosal health, such as B vitamins, vitamin C, and iron. If the child continues to show grinning or other unusual behaviors after the ulcer has healed, parents should promptly consult a doctor or dental specialist to rule out any underlying health issues.
