Preterm labor may occur in cases of cephalopelvic disproportion, genital tract infections, or polyhydramnios. When there is excessive amniotic fluid, the intrauterine pressure increases. In late pregnancy, if full term has not yet been reached, elevated intrauterine pressure can trigger preterm delivery. If an infection in the genital tract ascends to the uterus and causes chorioamnionitis, the protective function of the fetal membranes is compromised. This significantly increases the risk of premature rupture of membranes, leading to preterm birth.
