Disease description:

The doctor said the baby is in cephalic position. Does this mean the baby has engaged? Is cephalic position the same as being engaged?

A cephalic fetal position does not necessarily mean the fetus has engaged in the pelvis. A cephalic presentation refers to the fetal head being the first part to enter the maternal pelvis, which is considered a normal fetal position. Most pregnant women have a cephalic presentation, but this does not indicate that the fetal head has already descended into the pelvis. Once the fetal head enters the pelvic cavity and presses on the pelvic floor, it may trigger reflex uterine contractions, leading to shortening of the cervical canal. Dilation of the cervix then becomes a sign of impending labor.
