What are the symptoms of atrial septal defect?
Disease description:
Recently, I found out during a routine checkup that I have an atrial septal defect, but I have never had any symptoms. What are the symptoms of atrial septal defect?
Atrial septal defect (ASD) typically causes no symptoms in the early stages. In very rare cases, it may affect development, but the majority of patients are asymptomatic. If the atrial septal defect is particularly large, decreased exercise tolerance and pulmonary hypertension may develop with age, necessitating surgical treatment. Overall, most patients show no clinical symptoms.
