Pulmonary embolism is commonly treated with medications or surgery. It is a condition in which various types of emboli block the pulmonary artery or its branches, causing symptoms such as chest pain, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), and difficulty breathing. Anticoagulant therapy may be administered as prescribed, using anticoagulant drugs such as rivaroxaban or apixaban. Thrombolytic agents, such as urokinase or recombinant streptokinase, may also be used under medical guidance. If drug treatment is ineffective, surgical removal of the clot or interventional procedures may be considered.
