How to manage agitation in patients with alcohol intoxication
Disease description:
A friend drank too much alcohol and is showing symptoms of alcohol poisoning. How should one manage a patient with alcohol poisoning who becomes agitated and restless?
Agitation in patients with alcohol intoxication can be managed with medications and other interventions. Patients with mild intoxication should rest quietly, and family members should be assisted in applying appropriate physical restraint if needed; provide the patient with water to help eliminate alcohol from the body. For moderate intoxication, sedatives should be administered under close medical supervision, along with fluid replacement to promote metabolism. In more severe cases, oral sedatives may be given. If the patient is unconscious, hemodialysis may be performed.
