Electric water heaters with a designated grounding wire must ensure that the grounding wire is properly and securely connected to earth. The grounding wire can short-circuit current away from a person, allowing leakage current to flow safely back through the ground wire and thereby ensuring user safety. Never omit the grounding wire for convenience or in an attempt to save on wiring costs.
