What causes low sodium levels in a physical examination?
Disease description:
Recently, my boyfriend's workplace organized a physical examination. The results showed low sodium levels, but we don't know what caused it. Could someone please explain what might cause low sodium in a health checkup?
Low sodium levels on physical examination may be caused by reduced sodium intake, increased sodium excretion, or underlying diseases. A blood test indicating low serum sodium is primarily associated with decreased sodium intake. Patients with conditions such as hypertension or hyperlipidemia are often advised to reduce dietary sodium, which may lead to insufficient sodium intake and consequently lower serum sodium levels. Sodium is mainly excreted from the body through urine and sweat. Additionally, excessive water intake or intense physical activity leading to profuse sweating can result in significant sodium loss.
