Disease description:

Recently, I feel that no matter what I do, I can't perform well, and I've also noticed some lack of coordination in my limbs. After going to the hospital for a checkup, the doctor said it was due to brain atrophy. But I'm only in my twenties—could someone please explain why brain atrophy would occur at such a young age?

Dr. Guan Yanlei
Brain atrophy in individuals in their twenties is generally caused by conditions such as congenital leukodystrophy or severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Some patients who had encephalitis during childhood may develop brain atrophy as a sequelae of the infection. Patients with multiple sclerosis can also experience brain cell necrosis due to repeated disease relapses, leading to brain atrophy. Additionally, some cases result from sequelae of traumatic brain injury, which can cause significant brain atrophy. Therefore, there are many potential causes of brain atrophy.
