Disease description:
I am 32 years old. During a routine health checkup, I was found to have a teratoma, and my doctor recommended hospitalization for surgery. Is a teratoma the same as cancer? Is a teratoma the same as ovarian cancer?
Teratomas and ovarian cancer are not the same, although both are diseases of the ovarian reproductive system; they differ in causes and clinical features. First, teratomas can occur in both males and females, whereas ovarian cancer is limited to females. Teratomas may result from abnormal differentiation of embryonic germ cells, while ovarian cancer is associated with external factors such as chemical, biological, and physical agents, as well as internal factors including immune function, genetics, and endocrine status. Moreover, teratomas are mostly benign, and the primary treatment is surgical removal. In contrast, ovarian cancer is treated according to disease stage, typically involving a combination of surgery and chemotherapy.
