Infant water intoxication can be identified through symptoms and examinations. If a baby shows signs such as irritability, drowsiness, coma, or difficulty breathing, water intoxication may be suspected. For further diagnosis, the first step is to measure plasma osmolality and serum sodium concentration. If plasma osmolality and blood sodium levels are found to be below normal, a complete blood count should then be performed.
