Preterm labor in pregnant women can be caused by factors such as polyhydramnios and intrauterine infection. Twin or multiple pregnancies and polyhydramnios can lead to an enlarged uterine cavity. Intrauterine infections most commonly occur when pathogens from the lower genital tract ascend retrogradely through the cervical canal. Additionally, maternal systemic infections may allow pathogens to cross the placenta and infect the fetus, or pelvic infections may spread via the fallopian tubes into the uterus, leading to preterm premature rupture of membranes and complete preterm birth.
