How to treat complex and large pituitary tumors
Disease description:
Feeling slightly unwell, a medical examination revealed a complex and large pituitary tumor. How is a complex and large pituitary tumor treated?
Complex and large pituitary tumors can be treated using this staged surgical approach. Most patients opt for staged surgery, typically beginning with a craniotomy to remove the majority of the tumor above the sella turcica. This helps relieve visual pressure and prevents compression on surrounding normal brain tissue. The second surgery removes the remaining tumor via a transnasal transsphenoidal approach, targeting residual tumor within the sellar region. Follow-up evaluations are scheduled at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and annually thereafter to assess surgical outcomes and enable early detection and prompt treatment of any tumor recurrence.
