Disease description:

A low-lying placenta is not conducive to the baby's survival, and I'm afraid it will get worse as the pregnancy progresses. I'm considering termination of pregnancy. Is it advisable to have an induced abortion with a low-lying placenta?

Inducing labor with a low-lying placenta is not advisable. Although a low placental position carries some risk, the placenta will typically continue to grow and move upward as pregnancy progresses. Therefore, unless there is major bleeding or the placenta is extremely low, labor should not be induced to terminate the pregnancy. However, if the placenta is close to or completely covers the cervix (placenta previa), induction may be necessary. At this stage, the placenta is fully formed, the fetus is larger, and the bones are more rigid, requiring full dilation of the cervix during delivery—essentially resulting in a single, rapid birth—which carries certain risks.
