Why can't you open your mouth due to pericoronitis of wisdom teeth?
Disease description:
I've been taking amoxicillin and Isatidis Radix for nearly a week for pericoronitis of a wisdom tooth, but I still can't open my mouth. Why does pericoronitis of a wisdom tooth cause difficulty in opening the mouth?
Trismus (difficulty opening the mouth) in pericoronitis of wisdom teeth occurs because inflammation caused by pericoronitis restricts jaw movement. In severe cases, it may involve the muscles involved in swallowing, leading to difficulty swallowing. Insufficient space for wisdom tooth eruption often results in incomplete growth or impaction of the tooth. A deep blind pocket forms between the wisdom tooth and the gum. This pocket easily accumulates food debris and bacteria, and is difficult to clean during regular tooth brushing.
