What is placenta posterior?
Disease description:
Five months pregnant, I went for a prenatal checkup. The person ahead of me in line said they had placenta previa. When I went in, the doctor told me I have posterior placenta. What does posterior placenta mean?
Posterior placenta generally refers to the placenta being located on the posterior wall of the uterus. If the edge of the placenta is less than 7 cm away from the internal cervical os, painless vaginal bleeding usually does not occur, and normal vaginal delivery may not be significantly affected. However, if a pregnant woman undergoes a color ultrasound and is found to have a placenta previa—meaning the placenta covers the internal cervical os—vaginal delivery becomes risky due to the potential for painless vaginal bleeding and complications during labor. In such cases, a cesarean section is typically required.
