Disease description:
I want to get epicanthoplasty done, but I'm not sure how to describe it. What is the medical term for opening the inner corners of the eyes?
The medical term for opening the inner corner of the eye is epicanthoplasty. To correct small-eye deformity, enlargement of the inner canthus is required, along with medial canthal tendon fixation to address increased interpupillary distance, or ptosis correction of the upper eyelid. This procedure not only corrects epicanthal folds but also adjusts the distance between the inner canthi. Additionally, it helps prevent the formation of vertical scars or recurrent epicanthal folds at the inner canthus after surgery. However, postoperative scarring tends to be more noticeable and requires approximately one year to gradually fade.
