The characteristics of cerebellar ataxia due to cerebellar atrophy mainly include postural instability, impaired distance discrimination, poor coordination, difficulty with alternating movements, and delayed initiation or termination of movement. Cerebellar atrophy-induced ataxia leads to imbalance of the trunk and limb ataxia. Trunk balance impairment manifests as unsteady standing, constant swaying, and tendency to fall.
