Brain injuries can be classified into primary and secondary brain injuries based on the time of occurrence. Primary brain injury refers to damage caused by direct external force acting on the skull, including concussion, cerebral contusion and laceration, diffuse axonal injury, and primary brainstem injury. Secondary brain injury refers to brain damage that occurs within a certain period after the initial external force impacts the skull. It includes cerebral edema, intracranial hematoma, brain swelling, cerebral ischemia, and increased intracranial pressure.
