Is it normal to have menstruation 20 days after getting an IUD?
Disease description:
I had an IUD inserted 20 days ago, and recently started menstruating suddenly. Is it normal to get my period 20 days after having an IUD placed?
It is normal to have menstruation 20 days after IUD insertion. For women with regular menstrual cycles of 21–35 days, menstruation will continue normally after IUD placement. However, the IUD may cause increased menstrual flow, prolonged periods, or irregular cycles. Some women may also experience prolonged or irregular spotting with light bleeding, which usually occurs during the first few months after insertion. If there is heavy bleeding, seek medical attention promptly for a pelvic ultrasound. After IUD insertion, ovulation remains unaffected and amenorrhea does not occur; however, the device prevents implantation of a fertilized egg into the uterus.
