If a child exhibits significant drowsiness after infection with influenza B (flu B), it may be due to physical weakness caused by the flu. During the recovery period, the body may require more rest, leading to a state of increased sleepiness. If the child is alert and in good spirits with normal appetite when awake, this is usually considered normal, and parents need not be overly concerned. However, if the child is excessively sleepy and shows markedly decreased alertness when awake—such as lethargy and significantly reduced appetite—it could indicate complications involving the central nervous system, such as viral encephalitis, secondary to influenza B. In such cases, parents should take the symptoms seriously and seek prompt medical attention to rule out potential serious underlying conditions.
