Not brushing your teeth after a tooth extraction does increase the risk of infection, but it does not necessarily lead to infection. After tooth extraction, the wound requires time to heal. Poor oral hygiene may allow bacteria to grow at the extraction site, potentially causing infection. It is recommended not to brush your teeth on the day of the extraction to avoid irritating the wound. Starting the next day, you can gently rinse your mouth with salt water or a mouthwash recommended by your dentist. Be careful not to swish the mouthwash directly over the extraction site, as this could dislodge the blood clot. For one week after the extraction, avoid eating spicy, greasy, or hard foods that might irritate the wound. Maintain good oral hygiene during the healing process. If you notice signs of abnormal conditions such as increased redness, swelling, or pain at the extraction site, seek medical attention promptly.
