What should I do if I have limited mouth opening after tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction may stimulate the temporalis tendon and medial pterygoid muscle to some extent, causing spasms in these two muscles and resulting in trismus (difficulty opening the mouth). After tooth extraction, once local swelling and pain have subsided and the extraction site has healed well, if limited mouth opening persists, patients can apply warm compresses to the cheek area with a towel, perform warm saline mouth rinses multiple times daily, and combine these measures with active mouth-opening exercises. This approach will gradually help patients improve their ability to open the mouth.
