Disease description:

Recently, I've had pain behind the liver. After a hospital examination, the doctor said it might be caused by thickening of the gallbladder. Could you please tell me what is the normal thickness value for the gallbladder?

Dr. Yang Ziqi
The normal thickness of the gallbladder is 2.5–3.5 mm. Specifically, the gallbladder wall should measure between 2–4 mm in thickness, while the gallbladder lumen should be 1.5–2.5 mm thick. Normal gallbladder thickness depends on the size of the gallbladder itself, the size of its lumen, and the thickness of its wall. The thickness of the gallbladder wall can be measured via ultrasound, whereas the thickness of the gallbladder lumen can be assessed using cholangiography. If the gallbladder thickness exceeds the normal range, it may indicate conditions such as gallstones, cholecystitis, gallbladder tumors, or other hepatobiliary diseases. Patients with abnormal gallbladder thickness should seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital, where physicians can determine the appropriate drug treatment based on the clinical condition.
