Disease description:
What medication should be given for children with stomach pain and diarrhea?
Children with abdominal pain and diarrhea should seek medical attention at a hospital to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Commonly used treatments include oral rehydration salts to prevent dehydration and help reduce diarrhea; zinc supplementation; glutamine; and medications such as Smecta or probiotics. Zinc helps promote the growth of intestinal villi and enhances water absorption. Glutamine protects the intestinal mucosa from damage by pathogens. These mucosal-protective agents should be taken on an empty stomach to be effective and are not intended as antidiarrheal drugs. If abdominal pain persists, oral anisodamine (654-2) may be used for relief. In terms of diet, children should consume light, easily digestible foods.
