In general, if children consume excessive amounts of foods rich in carotene—such as carrots, oranges, tomatoes, and similar items—they may develop yellowing of the hands. Yellow hands in children can also be caused by jaundice. Jaundice is a common condition characterized by yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes. It occurs when bilirubin accumulates excessively in the bloodstream and cannot be properly excreted from the body. Bilirubin is produced when the liver breaks down hemoglobin and is normally eliminated through the liver and gallbladder. However, during the first few days after birth, an infant's liver function is not yet fully developed, making it difficult to effectively excrete bilirubin, which can lead to jaundice. If a child's yellowing of the hands is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, poor appetite, or diarrhea, prompt medical consultation is recommended for appropriate evaluation and treatment.
