Adults can also contract whooping cough. Whooping cough is an acute respiratory infectious disease caused by Bordetella pertussis and is highly contagious. Although children under the age of 5 are more susceptible, adults can also become infected with Bordetella pertussis and develop corresponding symptoms. Adults with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to infection.
