Is the heart on the left or right?

Under normal circumstances, most of the human heart is located on the left side of the thoracic cavity. Approximately two-thirds of the heart lies to the left of the body's midline, while one-third is on the right. Its shape resembles an inverted pear, with the apex pointing forward, downward, and to the left.

However, in rare cases, individuals may have variations in heart position, such as dextrocardia, where most of the heart is situated in the right thoracic cavity. This condition is extremely uncommon.

The position of the heart is significant for understanding its physiological functions and for diagnosing related diseases. For example, during an electrocardiogram (ECG), electrode placement is based on the heart's typical left-sided location. When performing cardiac auscultation, physicians also rely on the heart's normal position to identify the origin of heart sounds and murmurs. Although the heart is predominantly on the left side, it connects to the entire body through blood vessels, delivering oxygenated blood and nutrients to tissues and transporting metabolic waste to the lungs and kidneys for elimination.
