Can insufficient blood supply to the heart cause sudden death?
Insufficient blood supply to the heart may lead to sudden death, but it does not necessarily occur. Inadequate blood flow means the heart muscle isn't receiving enough blood and oxygen, which can impair normal heart function. If the reduction in blood supply is severe or prolonged, it may trigger serious consequences such as myocardial infarction, thereby increasing the risk of sudden death. For example, a sudden and severe blockage in the coronary arteries can cause a large number of heart muscle cells to become ischemic and die within a short time, potentially leading to cardiac arrest.
However, not all cases of insufficient heart blood supply directly result in sudden death. Mild cases, with timely treatment and lifestyle adjustments—such as improving diet, increasing physical activity, and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels—can be managed and improved.
If symptoms of inadequate heart blood supply, such as chest pain or shortness of breath, are noticed, immediate medical attention should be sought.
