Dull pain under the ribs below the heart
Dull pain below the heart and ribs may be caused by various factors. This type of pain could result from costochondritis, which is often triggered by strain, trauma, or infection, and manifests as localized tenderness and swelling. Pleuritis can also cause similar symptoms; inflammation irritating the pleura leads to pain, frequently accompanied by coughing and shortness of breath. If intercostal neuralgia is present, viral infections or injuries may damage the intercostal nerves, causing pain that typically presents as stabbing or burning sensations along the distribution area of the nerves. Digestive system issues, such as gastric ulcers or gastritis, may sometimes refer pain to this region.
Cardiac conditions like angina pectoris might also cause similar referred pain, although they are usually accompanied by other symptoms such as palpitations and chest tightness. If the pain persists or progressively worsens, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.
