Is the heart on the left or right side?

Under normal circumstances, most of the human heart is located on the left side of the thoracic cavity. About two-thirds of the heart lies to the left of the sternum's midline, while one-third is positioned to the right. The heart acts like a tireless pump, continuously delivering blood to all parts of the body. Its position plays a crucial role in maintaining normal blood circulation and vital bodily functions.

However, in rare cases, the heart may be positioned differently, resulting in a condition known as dextrocardia, where most of the heart is situated in the right thoracic cavity; this condition is uncommon. The heart consists of multiple chambers: the left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium, and right ventricle. These chambers work together to collect and pump blood. For example, the left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the entire body, while the right ventricle sends oxygen-poor blood to the lungs for gas exchange.
