Can people with chronic gastritis drink coffee?
Coffee is not recommended for patients with chronic gastritis.
Coffee contains caffeine, which can irritate the gastric mucosa, increase the secretion of gastric juice and stomach acid, and lead to discomfort such as abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. Additionally, caffeine may stimulate gastrointestinal motility, causing indigestion symptoms like diarrhea or constipation. For patients with chronic gastritis, these stimulants may exacerbate the condition and trigger recurrence.
In addition to coffee, patients with chronic gastritis should also avoid other irritating foods and beverages, such as chili peppers, garlic, strong tea, and alcohol. A light diet and adequate rest are recommended.
