The effect of Alismatis Rhizoma (Ze Xie)
Alisma is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the dried rhizomes of Alisma plantago-aquatica of the Alismataceae family, and it possesses various therapeutic effects:
1. Promoting diuresis and reducing edema: Alisma is a commonly used diuretic that increases urine output and promotes the excretion of urea and chloride. It is effective in treating edema caused by conditions such as nephritis, heart failure, and liver cirrhosis.
2. Clearing heat and eliminating dampness: Alisma is cold in nature and helps clear internal heat and drain dampness, making it particularly suitable for disorders caused by damp-heat. It can detoxify, remove dampness, promote urination, and alleviate symptoms of damp-heat, such as burning discomfort due to bladder damp-heat, fatigue, and general weakness.
3. Resolving turbidity and lowering lipids: Alisma helps resolve turbid phlegm and lower blood lipids. It reduces total cholesterol and fat levels in the blood, effectively lowering both serum total cholesterol and triglycerides. This provides supportive benefits in the management of hyperlipidemia.
4. Relieving abdominal distension and improving constipation: Alisma is used to treat digestive system issues such as bloating, diarrhea, and indigestion. It is believed to enhance intestinal motility and improve digestive function, thereby relieving bloating. Additionally, Alisma has a moistening effect on the intestines and promotes bowel movements, helping to relieve constipation and increase bowel movement frequency.
Note: Alisma has potential hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. High doses may lead to adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, increased bowel movements, abnormal liver function, and electrolyte imbalances. Therefore, it must be used appropriately only under the guidance of a physician.
