Phlegm-dampness symptoms and manifestations
Disease description:
Recently, I went to a TCM clinic for adjustment, and the experienced TCM doctor said I have excessive phlegm-dampness in my body. I'd like to ask, what are the symptoms and manifestations of phlegm-dampness?
Phlegm-dampness syndrome is mainly characterized by easy fatigue and intolerance to physical labor, often accompanied by symptoms such as soreness and weakness in the limbs, heavy-headedness, dizziness, abdominal fullness, and decreased appetite. In terms of physical signs, individuals with phlegm-dampness may be obese, have a soft and flabby abdomen, thick greasy tongue coating, and an enlarged tongue. Phlegm-dampness may also cause chest tightness, excessive sputum, sticky and unsatisfying bowel movements, and turbid urine. These symptoms not only impair patients' quality of life but may also be associated with other conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. For treatment of phlegm-dampness, dietary regulation is recommended as the first step—consuming more water-promoting and dampness-resolving foods such as coix seed (yi yi ren) and red beans (chi xiao dou), while avoiding greasy and raw-cold foods. Additionally, moderate physical exercise such as walking or jogging is advised to enhance metabolism and eliminate excess dampness from the body. If symptoms are severe, traditional Chinese herbal formulas such as Shen Ling Bai Zhu Wan or Liu Jun Zi Tang may be used under medical supervision to resolve phlegm, eliminate dampness, and regulate constitutional imbalances.
