Can a stye heal on its own?
Disease description:
Can a stye heal on its own?
Stye, medically known as hordeolum, is an acute suppurative inflammation occurring in the glands of the eyelid. Whether a stye can resolve on its own depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's immune resistance. If the stye is mild and the patient has strong immunity, it may spontaneously resolve within 1 to 2 weeks. This typically occurs because the patient's immune system effectively combats the infection and promotes resolution of the inflammation. However, if the stye is severe—such as when obvious pus formation, induration, or rupture occurs—or if the patient has weakened immunity, spontaneous recovery is unlikely. In such cases, prompt medical attention is necessary. Treatments may include local warm compresses, topical antibiotic eye drops or ointments, or incision and drainage to control disease progression and prevent complications.
