Can polycystic ovaries be seen on a B-ultrasound?
Polycystic ovaries can be detected via ultrasound. During an ultrasound examination, the number of follicles measuring 2–9 mm in diameter within the ovaries can be observed. If there are 12 or more such follicles, or if there is also an increased ovarian volume (≥10 cm³), polycystic ovaries may be diagnosed. It's important to note that polycystic ovaries represent just one sign of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but do not necessarily indicate the presence of PCOS. To confirm a diagnosis of PCOS, a comprehensive evaluation including clinical symptoms and hormonal profiles is required. Therefore, if abnormal ultrasound findings are detected, it is advisable to consult a doctor promptly for further evaluation and treatment.
